Fish Oil

Achieving the all-important 1:1 EFA (Omega-6 to Omega-3) ratio is not easy unless one eats virtually nothing but selected green leafy vegetables, wild-caught seafood, omega-3 meats, and grass-fed meats. The reason for the difficulty is that most modern foods are much higher in Omega-6 fatty acids than Omega-3 fatty acids. For instance, some favorites with many seeking a healthy diet are avocados, olives, coconut, olive oil, dark chocolate, nut flours, and macadamia nuts. It only takes a small quantity of these high Omega-6 foods to skew one's EFA balance well above 4:1 where the odds of contracting chronic diseases starts soaring. Since the coveted 1:1 ratio is so critical for optimal physical and mental health and a powerful immune system, if you haven't reached a low ratio, you may need fish oil supplements for a few months or so.

Our favorite Omega-3 supplement is in liquid form which is better than taking a formulation in a capsule. Of course the best approach is proper food rather than supplements. The Finest Fish Oil is by Carlson Laboratories. It's more economical in the 500 ml size and comes in lemon or orange flavor. Its oil is made from deep cold ocean-water fish and bottled in Norway to insure maximum freshness.

Take a teaspoonful mixed with foods, on salads, or straight. One teaspoon provides these Omega-3 fatty acids: 300 mg DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid), 500 mg EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid), 800 mg Daily Value. Fish oil also provides fat soluble vitamins: 1600 mg Vitamin E (as d-Alpha tocopherol), about 4,250 international units of vitamin A, and possibly 425 international units of vitamin D. Fat soluble vitamins build up in the body. Therefore long-term use of fish oil can possibly lead to vitamin toxicity which is why our fish oil limit is no more than one teaspoon daily of either one of these fish oils.

Carlson The Very Finest Fish Oil Liquid Omega-3 Lemon, 500ml (We prefer the lemon flavor.)

Flaxseed Oil

We have flaxseed listed here but we do not use flaxseed like the fish oil supplement. To us it's an additive to put in various foods that have a little too much Omega-6. For instance in eight ounces of guacamole dip we'll add one tablespoon of flaxseed oil to balance out the high Omega-6 to Omega-3 ratio of the avocado. Flaxseed oil also makes a great salad dressing. Not all ingredients in a salad have the healthy fat balance of the green leaves. So the flaxseed oil helps us keep the proper balance in salads and dips. Our favorite flaxseed oil is the Barlean's brand. There are times that we use the seeds rather than the oil. But we use seeds sparingly because they can cause indigestion. Whole flaxseed will store longer than ground flaxseed but the whole seed must be ground in order to get the maximum benefit.

Honey

There is a brand of honey that even Crohn's disease suffers say they can use. It's called Manuka Honey. The reason they can use this sugar source is that it has the antifungal properties of the manuka myrtle plant in it. This species of flowering plant, in the myrtle family Myrtaceae, is native to Australia and New Zealand and it's antifungal agent is more powerful than tea tree oil.

Manuka Honey is graded by its KFactor rating. We only recommend the KFactor 16 or higher rating.
