Grass-Fed Buffalo: Healthy, Humane, and Truly Beyond Organic

If you’re looking for the best value in grass-fed buffalo, Slanker is your trusted source. Our buffalo are grass-fed and grass-finished, raised on open pastures their entire lives. In rare situations such as deep snow or drought, they may be given natural forages like grass hay, alfalfa, or clover hay. We never allow “starch-free” plant proteins, grains, or cottonseed meal.

We partner with a large wildlife preserve that operates with minimal human interference, an ideal environment for producing truly natural, grass-fed meats. Most of our buffalo are Asiatic water buffalo, known for their calm nature and excellent meat quality.

What Makes Our Meats “Beyond Organic”

All Slanker Grass-Fed and Omega-3 Meats go beyond organic standards. Our meats contain:

  • No sugar or additives
  • No added hormones
  • No antibiotics
  • No GMOs
  • No gluten

They are also free-range, humanely raised, and exceptionally rich in Omega-3 fatty acids.

What sets them apart even more are their zero glycemic index, nutrient density, and Omega-6 to Omega-3 balance of less than 2:1. These characteristics have a far greater impact on long-term health than typical food labels suggest. That’s why we say our meats are “Beyond Organic”, because it’s about the actual chemistry of the food you eat.

Humanely Raised Buffalo

Our water buffalo are calm, gentle animals, unlike the more temperamental American Bison that still retains wild instincts. All of our buffalo are handled humanely, as are virtually all animals in the professional livestock industry. Despite popular misconceptions, livestock producers take animal welfare seriously. The vast majority treat their herds with care and respect.

Grass-Fed vs. Grain-Fed Buffalo

You may have heard that buffalo meat is healthier than other red meats, but that’s not always true. Most buffalo meat sold in the U.S. is actually grain-fed, and its nutritional profile reflects that.

The nutritional quality of meat depends entirely on what the animal eats. Grain-fed buffalo, like grain-fed beef or chicken, have imbalanced fatty acid ratios and lower nutrient levels. For optimal health, always choose grass-fed buffalo and verify your source.

Another common myth is that “lean meat” is better. While that might be true for grain-fed meats (where fat is unhealthy), grass-fed fat is beneficial. In fact, a well-marbled grass-fed steak contains healthy Omega-3 fats your body needs. If a supplier doesn’t understand that, they don’t truly understand nutrition.

When it comes to nutrient quality, grass-fed buffalo is comparable to our grass-fed lamb, goat, beef, Omega-3 chicken, Omega-3 pork, and wild-caught seafood, all outstanding choices for a balanced diet.

The Nutritional Advantage

All meats, whether grain-fed or grass-fed, have a zero glycemic index. However, grass-fed buffalo far surpasses grain-fed buffalo in vitamins, minerals, and healthy fat ratios.

Grain-fed buffalo can have Omega-6 to Omega-3 ratios as high as 20:1, while grass-fed buffalo averages near 1:1, a key indicator of anti-inflammatory benefits. Because grass-fed buffalo graze on nutrient-rich plants, their meat is denser in essential nutrients and naturally supports better metabolic health.

Grass-fed buffalo is leaner than grass-fed beef and has a slightly stronger flavor. It’s also firmer since these animals are more active. The exterior fat of grass-fed buffalo is rich in nutrients and should never be discarded. The bones also make excellent broth, full of collagen and minerals.

Cooking Grass-Fed Buffalo

Cooking grass-fed buffalo takes a gentler touch than cooking grain-fed meat. Because of its low fat content and firm muscle structure, it’s best prepared rare to medium-rare. Always cook to temperature, not color, since grass-fed meats tend to appear darker. For steaks and roasts, a rare internal temperature is 120°F. Avoid overcooking, as it can dry the meat and toughen the texture.

To ensure tender, flavorful results, let your buffalo meat come to room temperature before cooking, moderate heat rather than searing at high temperatures. A slow, steady approach allows the meat’s natural juices to remain intact. Resting the meat for five to ten minutes after cooking also helps redistribute the juices for a better texture.

For ground buffalo or roasts, moist cooking methods such as braising or slow-cooking work beautifully. Because the meat is lean, adding olive oil, butter, or tallow can enhance both tenderness and flavor. When grilling, keep a close eye on timing; grass-fed buffalo cooks roughly 30 percent faster than grain-fed beef.
