Column #381    December 16, 2022Kevin Stock and White Teeth

Dr. Kevin Stock puts out a concise and informative newsletter every Saturday at 7:00 A.M. central time. Its title is “Saturday 7.” Most of you are familiar with Kevin as a carnivore and the lead man for Meat Health Academy. Because he certainly walks the talk, since May 2019 I’ve written ten columns quoting some aspect of his nutritional guidance.1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12

In addition to being a fitness “nut,” carnivore, nutrition researcher, and lead instructor in his Meat Academy—Kevin is also a dentist. His recent comments about teeth inspired me to once again recommend his “Saturday 7" letter. Most of us still have our teeth and most certainly know some youngsters who need some advice about how diet and tooth quality go hand in hand. Additionally, pregnant women should listen up too.

In this column I’m going to “borrow” some snippets of Kevin’s comments regarding teeth. If you want more in-depth coverage, you’ll have to go to his Saturday 7 website. When you sign up you can view some old issues too.

●    “The nutrient density of meat is unmatched. Anyone telling you otherwise isn't interested in your health.

●    Broccoli is a cruciferous vegetable that contains glucosinolates, flavonoids, protease inhibitors, polyphenois and salycilates.
●    Broccoli is a goitrogen, meaning is has the ability to impact your thyroid and interfere with iodine in your body.
●    Like other cruciferous vegetables, broccoli can cause bloating and gas due to its fibre content.”13

“Half of life's problems disappear if you simply . . .
●    Eat healthy (mostly meat, zero seed oils)
●    Lift weights
●    Breathe through your nose
●    Prioritize sleep
●    Get natural sunlight

“Tooth decay is the most common disease in the world. We know the essential role of carbohydrates in this process, so you'd think there would be swaths of research on ketogenic diets and caries . . .  Alas, there's shockingly little.”

“The human body is perfectly adapted to an environment that no longer exists. If you don't make deliberate alterations to adjust the modern world to you, the mismatch will make you sick.”

“How to whiten your teeth:

“Dentists in the US have to do 50 hours of CE (continuing education) every two years for license renewal. My renewal was coming up and I still needed some hours, so I enrolled in three of the latest CE courses on teeth whitening (because I'm asked about this all the time). In this video I summarize the latest-and-greatest whitening methods and conclude with the best way to whiten teeth (for most people's needs). You can also download my notes to reference. “What dentists recommend you eat:

“Tooth decay is the #1 most common disease in the world. Found in every country, every demographic, and rates continue to grow. Last weekend I took the latest CE course on nutrition and caries. There were three main takeaways:
●    Tooth decay is caused by bacteria fermenting carbohydrates.
●    Protein and Fat don't cause cavities.
●    Nutritional Counseling: Healthy Eating Plate

“Here's the mind-blowing part . . .

“After points #1 and #2 were discussed, the course proceeded to nutritional counseling (#3) for patients, recommending the ‘Healthy Eating Plate.’ This plate is over 70% carbohydrate. Frustrating.

“We know tooth decay is a major problem, we know what causes it, yet there is almost no talk about the actual solution. I don't know if it's ignorance or fear or perverse incentives, but dentists should advocate low-carb, animal-based diets for oral health. I know this might sound crazy, but it seems that the diet that is good for oral health just might be good for your heart health too.”

Kevin and I agree on many things—but not everything. We’re on opposite sides of the Crypto Currency craze. He’s a Bitcoin advocate and recommends it as an investment. My take is that in time all crypto “currencies” will disappear. Money must fulfill a long list of criteria such as store of value, measure of value, durability, limited availability, divisibility, universal recognition and acceptance, and portability to actually be money. We don’t eat digital food, wear digital clothes, live in digital houses, drive digital cars, and have digital stuff. Cryptos are not part of the physical universe. In other words, over time I believe they have less value than pet rocks.15

But with that off-topic difference aside, when it comes to improving your health Kevin is one of the best spokesmen in the trade. I know everyone groans every time they hear a recommendation to sign up for another newsletter. So once again I want to emphasize that Kevin’s “Saturday 7" is very concise. You can speed read it in two minutes—if you don’t want to pause and watch the short videos he recommends from time to time. Each letter provides seven insights which always exercises the brain.
